french producer juliano delivers the next ep, entitled * this must be...*, on his own imprint * that place records*. fourth in line on the label, following on from releases from visitors for reworks, mzkbx (aka sacha mambo) and love comedy, the now berlin-based artist gifts his very first ep to the collection. as a dj, juliano has spent the last 13 years honing his craft - first cutting his teeth holding down a residency at l ambassade, and then going on to play all over france and throughout europe. over a decade of digging and spinning has led juliano to develop a refined palette and a knack for finding tunes that make the dance floor bounce. strongly influenced by us house, * panaugust* is a real dance floor killer with its never ending synth. the more emotional * anthem for a friend* is a real tribute, drawing inspiration from chicago and detroit such as the real mess with its special rhythm & blues vibe. finally, cupid mess brings a touch of japanese mood, evoking images of an early-morning rising sun thanks to the classic juno6 sound. julianos ethos is that music should stay fun - preferring to keep things simple, but always real. watch out for this one.

can t joke with dexy is the opener here and is a bumpy, edgy house cut with tense and nervy keys jangling above a roughshod drum line. it grows ever more dark and comic and things roll on before faith is a more breezy, airy house groove. the drums here dance a nimble dance, thin synths and emotive chords all come in rich layers and a lo-fi percussive line proves how frey can conjure up idiosyncratic sounds with ease. like its title suggest, ghosts is a hauntingly atmospheric track with icy hi hats, pixel thing and hugely melancholic chords and harmonic bells all adding a sense of calm and serenity to turbulent drums deep down below. lastly, scale is a sub 100bpm crawler with fat elastic synths strung up between lazy kicks. two filtered spoken word lines add plenty of weirdness to this soupy bit of cosmic seduction and round out an ep that is stuffed with fresh ideas and great sonic invention.

delsin present a new ep by b12 aka steve rutter entitled orbiting souls, a name which comes from the fact the veteran artist has recently spent contemplating the loss of a friend and believes we are surrounded by lost souls and spirits. this is b12 s second ep this year following on from the bokide 325 release on soma records and comes years after still acclaimed album like electro-soma and timetourist on warp records back in the 90s. orbiting souls is a somewhat complex journey, a representation of inner bi polar opposites, isolation, sadness, but also acknowledging the great and wonderful things around that swirl and support and energise us. a perfectly formed sound world that is both absorbing and cerebral and comes with a full colour sleeve by boris tellegen.

one year has passed since the pilotwings’ first output « agorespace ». expectations went further in 2015 as they contributed to the rave-ish j-zbel project. the pair is now back on bfdm with another ode to rurality and old-fashioned analogue. including 4 tracks, « molitor 71 » goes deeper into retrofuturist nostalgia and bucolic mood. a1 31 septembre (on va tout niker) introduces full-on panflute melodies and uplifting korg exotica. as the trancy chicago dream fades out, a2 les invasions babar unveils its weird combo of electro beats and massive patrick cowley-esque synths. unplanned bass moves lead this jam while an undertaking voice calls for no less than « the greatest experience of your life ». things settle down on the nocturnal b1 congo libre. focus on breakbeats and sophisticated rhythms evokes trance beats, while sparkling synths emerge from everywhere. the ep ends up with a floating ambient piece called buruganda ouverture and designed for the listener to rediscover the meaning of his existence. molitor will give you faith in humanity and flutes again.

some more grittiness from the hard beach entertainement camp, introducing this time the one and only cuban house don toni moralez with a bold mix of unfussy, old school influences. *ny edit 1* plays the catchy 90s house vocals card while *time 2 hit da dope* pays tribute to the memphis hip-hop scene with its heavy 808 and cryptic loopy lyrics. finally, wrapping things up with a bang (and hitting 140+ bpm!) *antonio montana at a techno rave* will keep only the most daring ravers going!

cristi cons and vlad caia are household names that really need no further introduction. their dj sets are techno stories well told and their live act is already making waves worldwide. amphia is first and foremost the platform they use to broadcast their finest works. such is the case of sideways, their latest lp, containing more than a dozen tracks coming your way trilogy style.
the first part reveals six tracks on two heavyweight discs. although most of the tracks fit the usual sit musical approach, the listener is greeted with a wide pallete of rhythms. assemble is an atmospheric dub infused with violins and orchestral echoes. permissive starts things up with a playful bass progression and continues with lush pads and cryptic voices. brooklyn’s deep moody synths and monster groove render it broken poetry at it’s best. for sure it will resemble those early danceable mornings. on a more joyful manner we are presented next with bootcamp s sturdy baseline and playful modulated vocals.

argentinian pfirter steps up first with 2 versions of the sublime irritant. he delivers 2 strong versions, one of which delves into a deeper side of things and another more club orientated weapon. new french boy on the block, roman poncet, fires things up with his version of rotary. a pounding, relentless take on slams original awaits. closing off this stellar group is etapp kyle. his gamma mix of convolute goes into almost ambient territory but remain one for those early mornings as he keeps things deep and trippy.

kyle geiger returns on his home label with a set of tracks designed to recapture the basic function of techno. it s music to sweat to at a party. additionally, this package aims to capture a sense of timelessness through melody interwoven with a pumping breed of techno rhythms. the title track, homecoming, starts with a bottom-heavy percussive workout, then presses forward with an array of slowly filtering brighter synth stabs. the breakdown sees an arpeggiated synth slowly overtake the rhythm of the track just long enough to build tension and bring things back to full speed. the verge is a very stripped back, drum track style cruiser, which builds tension with a rising distorted pulse sound filtering in and out. just as it seems that the back half of the track will carry on as planned, a running melody comes in and changes the direction of the entire track. the verge (beat tool) is identical to the original, but build for those a little shy about slightly more upfront melodies.

anouka started a year ago with her first sets on soundcloud and the response was incredible, building her fan base consistently. her debut ep traveller is released on soso, the label that she runs together with zusammenklang and oliver schories. the ep reflects what anouka always tries to express in her sets: showing that melancholy and happiness are very close together and they can work harmoniously. she recorded the vocals for both tracks by herself, which was challenging yet very rewarding. frequent traveller kicks things off nicely with its melancholic moodiness shining through as we meander effortlessly through berlin inspired melodies, while the sultry vocal sits wonderfully on top adding an extra layer of depth. christopher schwarzwalder is on remix duties, and from the off creates tension as this atmospheric rework subtly growls as it grooves. its sparseness is the key here, as this restrained gem works its magic. liberty is next as it tinkles away, creating a warm glow, and its caressed with its spoken french vocal, creating an air of sophistication. and rounding things off nicely is the midas 104 remix. this mystical touch up takes the energy levels up a notch, but increases the melancholy further and adding an air of just the right amount of wonkiness and quirkiness.
